This Friday the14th, in front of my home in north Bryan, I'll be having my
one and only yard sale of the year.

I have unopened Starting Line-up Basketball Figures, camera accessories,
computer games, ATA gear, collectibles, decor, small home furnishings, toys, games, electronics, VHS,
MORE books, clothes, jewelry, old kitchen knives, HO scale train landscaping,
brass, and new deadbolts.

At this point, I can not read any more emails. If you have any questions,
just call at 6AM Friday.

I had already priced most of the items months ago intending to take them to
the flea market, but never did. So ignore the prices - NOTHING WILL BE OVER ONE DOLLAR!

The primary purpose of this yard sale is to clear some space, not make money.

I'll be open EARLY so you can visit on your way to work, and open late so you
can visit after work. However, I will be working HARD not have anything
left over by 6PM. After 10AM, I will start offering BIG discounts on anything
left over AND I will be talking to anyone willing to buy or take all the
leftovers at the end of the day.

Putting Maps to All the Local Yard Sales on your Smart Phone - Android

This should work on any Android based Verizon Wireless Smartphone.

First make sure your phone has the "maps" app installed.

Set your phone aside and go to your computer.

Go to the local online Garage Sale listings.

In my area that would be:

The Eagle - http://www.theeagle.com/Classifieds/Search/GarageSales/

Shop Brazos - http://www.shopbrazos.com/garagesales/

Craigslist - http://collegestation.craigslist.org/gms/

Once you've found your source of addresses,

open a new page, tab, or window and go to Google Maps - http://maps.google.com/maps

Click - My Places

Click - Create a New Map

Give it a title you'll recognize like "today's date"

Copy and paste an Yard Sale address in the SEARCH BAR

<804 E Villa Maria Rd, Bryan, TX 77802>

Click in the location shown on the map and an information box will appear.

Click - Save to Map

Select the My Places Map you just created and then

Repeat the last four steps until all the Yards Sales appear in the map.

Once you're finished, go back to your smartphone and re-open the MAPS app.

Open the LAYERS tab and scroll down and hit the MY MAPS key.

The phone should show you all the maps you have made using the "My Places"

function of GOOGLE Maps.

Select the map you made on the computer and you should see a map of the city and all the locations you plotted on the map. You can zoom in on any one and tap it once to see the address, then tape it again to get - driving directions, street view, and share comment about the yardsale on Twitter, Facebook, and the like.

This is good example of "just because it's rare, doesn't mean it's valuable".

When I bought is 3 or 4 years ago there were only four copies available for sale in North America

and they wanted over $100 for it.

Today there are eight for sale in the U.S. for as low as $60, but as far as I can tell,

no one has ever sold a copy.

*When I refer to checking eBay sales records, I mean checking COMPLETED and SOLD sales records. The only way you can check past eBay sales records is to sign up and LOG IN. Many people at yard sales will tell you an item is selling for hundreds of dollars on eBay ( They may even have a printout of one in auction) when all they have really looked at is what sellers are ASKING. Most of the time this person doesn't even have an eBay account, so how can they know what's ACTUALLY SELLING? Always check it yourself.

Wow! Barely a month ago I express my amusement that silver had hit $38 / ounce. Two days ago silver hit just over $48/ounce matching the hight of the Hunt Brothers campaign of 1979. That mean is you have been saving those 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars, they are worth about $20 each now. Today at the yard sales I found 1.25 ounces of .925 Sterling Silver jewelry worth $55 - just as silver! But since it's jewelry, I will be able to to get $75-$95 for it.

Another home-run find was a mixed case of new HASEGAWA 1/144 and 1/72 scale WWII model kits. I bought a dozen for $3.00.

I also bought a Peen Peerless Casting Reel, a Channel F System II Home computer system, a parcel sized mailbox ( really needed), and a good bike for Linda ( she wants to do an Ironman race one day ). Would of bought more, but neither of us felt well, so we quit after lunch.

And of course, it did not rain.

Silver Thursday - Coming soon, again?

Silver is now at $38.70 / oz - more than double what is was a year ago. I am reminded that 32 years ago this day the Hunt brothers failed in their attempt to corner the market after causing the price of silver to rise from $6.00 to $48.70 an ounce.

Recently I have heard conspiracy theories that some-one or some government is trying to corner the market again. I scoffed at the idea until learning that the 1979 Hunt's Bros. attempt was made by hording only 100 million ounces of silver ( 1/3 the non-gov supply ) - an investment of about $1.5 billion. But even if it took $2 to $3 billion to do the same today, there are a lot more private citizens today that have that much cash to try it again.

CHICKEN LITTLE REPORT: Local sighting of International Space Station - Saturday Morning

Normally, I'm not real big on getting up in the morning to star gaze, but this Saturday I'll be out bright and early hitting the yard sales, and so will the space station - out bright and early that is - not shopping.

Weather permitting, at 6:32 AM CST this Saturday the 26th, interested Bryan / College Station residents should FACE North West. In less then a minute ISS should appear in the West getting brighter as it travels North by North East toward the sunrise. It should be visible for 2 to 3 minutes.

This will be the last good sighting of the ISS for us here in B/CS this month.

Because of its size ( 167 x 357 ft ) and massive array of solar panels, the ISS is often the brightest "star" in the sky, and is sometimes confused with local air traffic on landing approach. You do not need binoculars or telescope to see it. Just a sense of direction. Barring that, a compass.

CHICKEN LITTLE REPORT: Last local sighting of Shuttle Discovery

CHICKEN LITTLE REPORT: Local sighting of Space Station and Space Shuttle tomorrow evening ( Thurs 3/10) . At 7:02 PM CST face north by northeast, look up 30 degrees, wait 5 minutes and you should see the Space Shuttle go by. Seven minutes later and slightly higher (43deg) you should see the Space Station within the next 4 minutes. The Station should be a little brighter. This is the LAST time you can EVER see the Shuttle Discovery in flight. I plan to drive out to the countryside to get a clear view. Maybe even bring a camera.

2/12/2011 - Explosive Yard Sale Hunt

Don't have much time to wax about last Saturday's hunt, so I'll just hit the high points.

First Yard Sale Hunt of the New Year is Radioactive!

Beautiful weather and few yard sales made for a leisurely and thorough hunt last Saturday.

The oddest thing found was a pair of c1960’s Victoreen Geiger Counters. Even is they don’t work, I though they looked very cool.

A nearby geologist was kind enough to bring over a radioactive source to test them for me. He bought over a 20% uranium ore sample - carrying it in his pants pocket. ( I wouldn’t) He said the gas tubes had leaked out on both Geigers, so they are now retired to being conversation pieces from the “Duck And Cover” generation.

Saturday was apparently "Sell you RISK game" day – I bought four and was able to complete three for resale.

Of course, the problem with hunting for cool items for resale, you often find VERY cool items and want to keep for yourself. This can really cut into your profit margin. At the very first yardsale I bought a Meade TeleStar 60AZ-A 60mm Refractor Telescope. I LOVE telescopes. If I have room I would COLLECT telescope. This one has a huge 1.25” 25mm eyepiece that is worth more than half of what I paid for the whole scope. IF I sell it. Now I need to compare it to my current scope to see which one I am going to sell.

Another item I am loath to get rid is a Sylvania Sun Gun II SG-55. This light was for 8mm home movie cameras. It will blind your loved ones and set fire to furniture. Now WHO would not want to keep that?

Bringing Home the WEIRD

There were about 50 yard sales listed this week with probably another 20 more unlisted. We hit out first sale in College Station at about 7:10 ( just after breakfast ).

The very first sale was an indication today picks were going to be ...eclectic. I try not to act to excited when I get out of the truck, but just blurted out, " Is that a Camel Saddle?! " It was, and I bought it.

Actually, I think it's a footrest made to look like a saddle. The owner said they DID buy it in Saudi Arabia ( probably at a tourist trap ).

The rest of the loot being unloaded:

Little Geisha Dolls in glass cases, Mushroom basket, Model Sale boat, GIANT Cox RC airplane, bar signs, and another picnic basket ( new ). But the best find was silver and gold jewelry. I bought several bags of costume jewelry for about $1-$4 a bag. Inside was about a half ounce of 925 Sterling jewelry ( 92.50% pure ) and 3.1 grams of 14K gold necklace and charms. The MELTDOWN value of sterling is $16.57 per ounce, and 14K gold is worth $22.49 a gram. Not bad considering it's nice jewelry, and all the costume jewelry can be sold. too!

eBay is running a promotion the next two weeks where you can list 100 auctions at ANY start price for no listing fee...so,...I'm busy with that.

Two days ago I found a pair of WWII Army Air Corp wings mixed in with a large lot of jewelry I bought. Awed to think they may have flown over Europe or the Pacific.

Surprisingly, at least for me, I picked up some commission sales jobs earlier this week. I've been so busy selling my own stuff that I will only sell other's for 50% commission. At least it was interesting items. ( Relax. There are no links to auctions )

Legos save the day - AGAIN!

After only being able to hunt for 2 hours last week, it was good to put in a full morning yard saling today. We brought home a good quality half-truckload of stuff on which we should at least double our investment - picnic baskets, nice silver plate, Yamaha guitar amp, a printer box, digital keychain, and the like.

Some things I will adapt for use at the store - racks for jewelry and photo stands.

I did not feel we had found anything exceptional until I started looking up the Legos we bought.

If all four sets are complete, they should bring about $150 in auction.

Not bad for a $11 purchase! Of course, now I have to assemble them to make sure it's all there.

Last I am happy to announce that I have finally found a plain VGA video cable for my old flat panel monitor ( been looking for 2 months )

A Better Laptop

Our yard saling trip last Saturday went quite well considering the time constraints for that day. ( We had to pickup a large Singer sewing machine for my mother, unload the truck, take the dog to get a flea dip, and still be in Temple, TX by 5PM for Linda's half Marathon ) As a matter of fact, we blew most of our purchasing budget on the FIRST STOP in Bryan where I got an upgrade for my business laptop for $65!

Lighter, a good battery, Win XP, and WIFI - Sweet! Now I just need to sell
my old Dell P3 Laptop. ( 6/28/10 - Sold it about a week later )

After a trip to the ATM, we pushed on down through Bryan and into College Station

where we found a Futaba Radio, Estes Super Shot, Rf Modulator, Brighton Key Fob, New
Kia Wheel Cover, and a Sealed KOBE BRYANT NINTENDO 64 Game. The best finds of the
day, so far, was a

Lego Studios #4852 Spider-man The Final Showdown - Factory Sealed - Valued at $75.

I paid $5.00

And these Sealed Lego 3-in-1 sets worth $7 to $15 - you can never go wrong buying Lego

Time for bed. Tomorrow I have to get over to Yesterday's Treasures, where I rent display space, and catalog the inventory of a neighboring vendor I bought out. She was leaving and I wanted her huge display area.
